It all depends what you've got already, If you haven't got a broadband connection then thats the place to start I can recommend (for free and independently) broadband providers for different uses. If you're a straightforward home user in Doncaster then the best bet is probably virgin or sky. If you're a gamer, geek, nerd or business user then there's quite a few choices and there is a lot you need to consider about how you're going to use it. If you want to host your own websites or run secure services then you definitely need something more than the standard home user package.
So the endpoint of all that is
- Do you have ADSL
- Do you have wireless
- Do you need equipment
- Do you need configuration (setup)
- Do you need something above and beyond the normal web services
Virgin Cable Broadband The advertising focuses on high speed "fibre" connections but its a lie - what goes to you is a copper connection and yes it can go fast but virgin have a history of throttling user connections whenever they have high demand. They also are very difficult when it comes to fixed addresses and name services. Another point to consider is that they took part (along with BT) in trials of phorm (now renamed) which basically watches everything you do on the internet with the intention of altering what you see to put adverts into it, the sticking point being that once everything is being monitored what else could be done with it.
Sky Broadband this can vary a lot depending on where you are but the idea behind sky is that you have to have a BT phone line (so they can check up on you) and your internet requests go out on that but the download comes via your dish which can be a pretty fast download speed the trouble is that there can be problems with latency (lag) especially if the weather (on the sun or the earth) is bad. On the plus side they supply a wireless capable network router if you're on one of the better packages
